Shipboard Risk Management
Introduction
In a dynamic work environment on board a ship, management of operational risks is an absolute necessity for preventing accidents and incidents. An accurate risk assessment serves as a dependable decision support system by which the ship's staff can handle hazardous situations with greater safety. A formal risk management approach is the demand of the shipping industry for safeguarding human life, the marine environment, the vessel and its cargo.
Overall, this Course deals with the concepts of risk management, and practical methods of applying these concepts on board in day-to-day operational situations. Use is made of the risk-matrix methodology and company-specific risk management processes. It also includes a module on Root Cause Analysis and Incident Investigation, as a supporting tool for risk management.
Course Objective
This course aims to inculcate in the trainee, the knowledge and skills of shipboard risk management so as to reinforce the operations of all safety mechanisms that have been put in place by international requirements eg ISM, ISO. At the end of the course, the trainee should be in a better position to effectively deal with shipboard risks to avoid, if not reduce losses accompanying such risks.
